aka Episode #7 of STFUAJPGM is now available HERE. It’s a brilliant series of chiptune mixtapes, which I have mentioned previously, and this one contains the awesome remix of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band I mentioned the other day, as well as a few other cover versions of various artists.
This week’s theme: Alternate Worlds
In late 1988, the great professor Philip Henry Guttenburg Von Datamosh XIII disappeared from his home laboratory. He was known for his immense knowledge in many fields, as he held 9 doctorates in an array of fields including Ancient History, Computer Sciences, and Music Composition. The last known footage of VonDatamosh was taken from a security camera in his home. He was seen turning on his NES and Particle Field Generator at the same time. Years later, his journal was found in the very spot that he was last seen standing.

Some massive Gundam statue thing somewhere – probably Japan. Looks cool.
That is all.

Following the re-release and remasters of all The Beatles’ albums, and The Beatles: Rock Band, comes WANNA HLD YR HANDHELD, VOL.1 by the 8-Bit Operators:
Almost 2 full years in the making, the 8-Bit Operators’ “Wanna Hld Yr Handheld, Vol. 1” Beatles tribute focuses on the glorious avant-garde and electronic side of the Fab 4 with over 20 of the biggest international names in 8-bit chip music, all utilizing the hardware of re-tooled, classic Game Boys, Ataris, Nintendo Entertainment Systems, circuit-bent toys, Commodore 64s and Apple II computers.
It’s pretty good, with my favourite track being the cover of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. You can listen to it via the site, or you can pay fro the download HERE.
EXCITE! October 28, 2009

Great timing, this. I just recently downloaded Excitebike on the Virtual Console via that free-NES-game-if-you-downloaded-the-internet-browser offer on the Wii shopping channel, so the announcement of Excitebike: World Rally on WiiWare was a nice surprise. It still takes place on a 2D plane, but with a 3d makeover, and the inclusion of online multiplayer and track editor makes this a day one purchase for me. The original is a forgotten classic, and Excitebike 64 wasn’t too shabby (Virtual Console, please) so here’s hoping that, unlike Excitebots, this actually makes it over to Europe. Preview at IGN is HERE. Trailer is in the video below, skip to 0:55 and avoid the irritating presenters if you don’t want to lose the will to live.
Games Of The Year So Far August 15, 2009

We are more than half way through the year now (I actually meant to post this a month ago) and it’s been a pretty good one for games so far with the Wii in particular having a surprisingly strong line-up. While this will probably be a little different at the end of the year, click below for a list of my favourite games of the year so far (in no particular order)

If you’ve been a regular listener to any podcast starring freelance games journalist Robert Ashley (GFW Radio, A Life Well Wasted) then you are probably aware of his band – I Come To Shanghai – formed with his friend, Sam Frigard. Their debut album was released a few months back on their website as a free download, “name your price” download and a hard copy for $10 – the option I went for. I won’t pretend to be a music buff or anything, all I’ll say is that their music is some pretty decent psychedelic pop/soft rock. My favourites out of the ten tracks are; “Pass the Time” with it’s simple yet hypnotic beat, the delicate piano melody in “I Watch You Sleep” and the muffled drums of “Salvation is the Country”. While perhaps too varied and disjointed at times, it’s a good album and worth checking out.
Vote Toejam & Earl August 14, 2009

Long story short, go HERE and vote for Toejam & Earl. Sega have set up a poll to decide what game will be the next Sega Genesis Mega Drive released on XBLA. At the time of writing, shit, not-aged-well-at-all platformer Earthworm Jim is currently in the lead with a revolting 43% of the votes, and Toejam & Earl is second with 20%. You can read my thoughts on Earthworm Jim HERE.
Toejam & Earl on XBLA means much-needed quicksaves. The original game offered no ability to save over the twenty five-odd levels, and while quicksaves may make things far too easy of you are overly-cautious, they would be a welcome addition. Of course, online co-op is surely a dead-cert. The two-player co-op in the original was fantastic, a great game to play with a friend and just chill out to one of my favourite game soundtracks ever – funky bass and hip-hop beats.

Jammin’.

This is quite funky. Wordle creates an image from text provided by you, and the end result can be fully customised – including the font, layout and colours. I found THIS, courtesy of NeoGAF, which provides a list of your most played artists in Last.fm, which you can then copy & paste into Wordle and produce something like mines seen above. Artists with higher play counts appear in a larger font, which is a nice touch. LOL @ Girls Aloud and IGN Staff being in there…
Prototype Review (Xbox 360) July 8, 2009

It was great to finally play a “superhero” sandbox game where you didn’t have to worry about being good or bad, Alex Mercer simply has his own agenda and doesn’t care about anything else – as can be seen by the way he comically shoves pedestrians out of the way as he walks by. The Alex you see in the cutscenes is the same Alex you play as, unlike Niko Bellic whose in-game actions were pretty disjointed from what you saw in the cutscenes.
The thing that really sets this apart from other recent sandbox games is Alex’s vast arsenal of superpowers, it succeeds where others (Infamous cough cough) have failed. as if being able to run up buildings wasn’t enough, the abilities you learn in this give you a genuine sense of power. From things like elbow-dropping a tank from the top of a skyscraper to picking up and launching a car at a pursuing helicopter, Prototype does a fantastic job in making you feel like a complete badass. You barely ever feel vulnerable and know that there is a move to get you out of any situation. Hijacking a helicopter in mid-air using your whip attack never gets old. I also loved the Guyver-like armour which limits your movements but it’s worth it, if only because you look like a badass. Also, the ability to absorb people and take their identity provided some brilliant T-1000-esque moments.
It’s obvious some graphical detail has been sacrificed in order to make the city feel more alive, but this was definitely for the better. The streets being filled with civilians and vehicles adds to the mayhem when things kick off. It’s great watching the city slowly decay into an infected mess over the course of the game and randomly come across fights between the infected and the military.
Along with Crackdown, Prototype is one of the best sandbox games I’ve played this generation and it certainly provided the most fun I’ve had from a game this year so far. The sense of power it gives you is phenomenal and the open-ended way in which you can approach most of the missions adds to the enjoyment. I also thought the Web of Intrigue was a very clever idea to help develop the story a bit more. There are plenty of side-missions to keep you occupied, along with orb collecting for added Crackdown-ness.
Badass, in a word.

The Mystical Ninja Returns… June 30, 2009

..in a fucking pachinko game. Oh Japan.
It’s a shame, really, since a new Goemon game in the same vein as Mystical Ninja: Starring Goemon/Goemon’s Great Adventure using the same art style as that trailer would no doubt be brilliant.
